Tool #11

1. What are your favorite tools you now have in your personal technology toolbox? 

I am so pleased to know that my classroom will be equipped with the new devices next year. I already had plans to incorporate my own personal iPad for student use to create online tutorials. Having more than one iPad for student use will accommodate more students at a time. I would like to see the iPads become a regular part of classroom learning where students can not only use them for specific assignments but also to independently find information that relates to what they are learning as needed. I often find students asking me questions like, "Do you have any more worksheets with practice problems?" I look forward to teaching my students how to search for specific math concepts and finding exactly what they need.

2. How have you transformed your thinking about the learning that will take place in your classroom? How has your vision for your classroom changed? Are you going to need to make any changes to your classroom to accommodate the 21st Century learner?

Learning about the various technology resources available has made me more aware of the changes that need to take place in the classroom to keep up with the evolving technology that surrounds the real world. Lessons and activities need to be relevant to our students' real world in order to create a more meaningful learning experience for the students. Having the netbooks and iPads readily available in my classroom will enable the students to have more exposure to technology. They need to see this as an opportunity to obtain information, communicate with others in various ways and make the connection between what we do in the classroom and what they do outside of the classroom. I will need to thoughtfully plan more lessons that incorporate ways for students to use our new devices in a purposeful manner. I will need to collaborate with other teachers for ideas and attend professional development to ensure that my proficiency with technology is up-to-date.

3. Were there any unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?

I was not familiar with many of the available resources and enjoyed navigating through the Tools. From just the few that I thoroughly tested out, I found applications that I plan to use in class next year. It is nice to know that other teachers on campus are becoming familiar with the same Tools enabling me to ask other teachers for assistance as I recreate my classroom to incorporate these Tools.

Tool #10

1. Discuss at least three things you would want to make sure your students understand about being good digital citizens.
I- Students need to know how to differentiate valid sources of information from invalid ones.
II- Students need to learn how to be cautious of unsafe material for their protection.
III- Students need to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.

2. Share at least one of the resources mentioned above or on the Ed Tech website that you plan to use instructionally. Atomic Learning offers several opportunities to learn about digital citizenship and how to introduce students to the concept. I plan to view these videos to get ideas on how to best incorporate learning about digital citizenship in the classroom for next school year.

3. Explain briefly how you would "teach" the idea of digital citizenship to your students. Digital citizenship needs to be taught daily. Students need to learn through individual discovery (with the help of their teacher and peers) to fine tune their understanding and compliance with digital citizenship.

 4. Explain briefly how you plan to share the idea of digital citizenship with your parents. I plan to send an e-mail to determine which parents are active technology users. The email would include links to resources about digital citizenship. Parents that do not use email will likely not be aware of digital citizenship and will need to be informed of what is available online to their children, both good and bad, since their children will have access and exposure to technology in the classroom. Sending a letter home may be the most effective way to inform those parents of my plans to incorporate technology throughout the year.

Tool #9

Technology should be tied to the objective so that students become aware of how the content area is applied in something they can relate to such as technology making for a more meaningful learning experience. We need to hold students accountable for the stations/centers to ensure proper care of these new devices to lengthen their lifespan.

Two interactive websites for your content/grade level that I visited are Tutpup and Manga High. Both sites offer fun and competitive ways to engage students in practice of fundamental skills like arithmetic. One way to incorporate these sites would be to create a station for students to go to after completing an in-class assignment, during advisory/intervention or after school. Students could keep track of their performance and compete against classmates. To hold the students accountable for their time in these stations, students could sign-up for time on the device and write a short description of their objective before using the device.

Two apps on the iPad that we currently use in my classroom are ShowMe and TurboScan. ShowMe allows the students to draw on the screen while recording both voice and drawing. Students can work a math problem on ShowMe while explaining their work. Below is an example of a ShowMe tutorial that my student made in class. TurboScan is a simple scanner allowing students to take pics of documents and convert them into PDFs to email or text message. The iPad is also an excellent tool for quickly recording students and creating tutorials. With the iPad, uploading videos to YouTube is simple since the recording are already on the device.

Tool #8

Two things I you learned about the device(s) that will be in your classroom this fall: My classroom will be equipped with Netbooks and iPads next year. It will be necessary to be diligent in checking inventory at the end of each period. Currently, I do not have a procedure in place for this and will need to make adjustments for next year. With the iPads, I learned that each teacher will customize iPads by downloading and syncing apps to our laptops. I am pleased about this as there may be apps my students use more often in one subject and different ones in another. I would prefer that our iPads are not overloaded by apps that are not regularly used in our classroom.

How do you plan to manage the device(s) in your classroom? Do you have ideas/suggestions that others may find useful? I am considering assigning technology managers to check inventory and ensuring that devices are properly stored at the end of each period. I will probably also label each device and assign students to the devices for accountability.

Tool #7

Content objective: Students will gather data from all NHS Algebra 1 classrooms by collaboratively inputing the data into a Google Spreadsheet. Students will then create a scatter plot to determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

Tool #6

I tried out Poll Everywhere and Wallwisher. Wallwisher is pretty neat. I may try using it next year as a wrap up activity. Students can post a comment about the day's lesson and we could review the posts the following day. It would help connect the daily lessons and students would have a better understanding of how one lesson builds on the previous lesson. Poll Everywhere is a nice and easy way to survey the class for feedback which can help me to determine the overall level of understanding. I probably would not use it as part of the lesson because the Activ Votes do the same thing and students can respond faster with a single button. Poll Everywhere requires texting a numerical value which corresponds to a response. The advantage of Poll Everywhere to the Activ Votes is that students can respond from a remote location like their home.

Tool #5

This was an enjoyable Tool. I tried out the different applications and decided on ABCYa and Xtranormal. ABCYa would be a fun way to display terminology for a word wall. Xtranormal was great and gave me many creative ideas for presenting information to the class in an entertaining way. Students can also share what they learn with each other in this story-telling application. Again, biggest frustration...most of these sites required Flash so using my iPad was not an option.
